Secondary Forms

Jow Ga’s secondary forms consist of six forms which includes; Small Four Level Fist, Four Level Fist, Monkey Fist, Lohan Fist, Tiger Crane and 5 Animals Fist. Each form has its own distinctive techniques, pace, applications, drills and conditioning exercises.

Small Four Level Fist 

A beginners form which is one of the shortest Jow Ga form in our curriculum, which a condensed version of techniques from Small Tiger and Four Level fist. It focuses on introductory strikes and kicks techniques

  • Stance training: Horse Stance, Kneeling Stance, Cross Stance
  • Stance training: Cat Stance, Crane Stance, Jor Mah  
  • Punching from the hips, Ping Chui & Jik Chui
  • Drilling and Conditioning for Strikes and Kicks
  • Blocking tehcniques: e.g. hopping, Cutting
  • Strikes: e.g. Gwa, Luk Chui, Deng Chui

Four Level Fist

Also known as Four-Square, this basic set is sometimes taught before the Small Tiger because it is shorter. Teaches many of the basics of Jow-Ga including some techniques not included in the Small Tiger.

Consisting of between 60-70 moves of mostly Hung Gar origin including the fundamental branch binding hand sequence. Also is the first basic form to include a jumping kick.

Monkey Fist

Also known as Hou Kuen, this form depicts a monkey, which unique techniques and footwork is introduced, ranging from monkey stealing the peach. Ground work, trips and kicks from the ground.

Lohan Fist

Lohan is a mythical figure in Chinese Buddhism, and many Chinese martial arts have a form dedicated to such a being. It is characterized by large powerful movements.

It is also a form that emphasizes the use of "Chong Chui" Rushing Fist and also introduces the "Lohan washing his face" which is actually 3 techniques (Cup Chui, Com Chui, and Jon Chui) done consecutively. This form was created by Chow Biu after he came to Hong Kong.

Tiger Crane

The core of the set comprises relatively short sections of the tiger and crane techniques; there are 10 tiger and 8 crane techniques. The tiger and crane symbolizes the unique characteristics and balance of the style Hung Ga.

The hardness, power, and ferocity of the tiger claws is complemented by the softness, evasiveness, and elegance of the crane’s wing, crane’s beak and crown.

5 Animals Fist

The five animals refer to the characteristic Five Animals of the Southern Chinese martial arts: Dragon, Snake, Tiger, Leopard, and Crane.
